How, as a Chief Petty Officer, will you instill our Navy Core Values and maintain professionalism within your command and United States Navy?

The author of this article describes the core values as “bedrock principles.” The Free Dictionary1 defines bedrock as the “solid rock that underlies loose material” or “the foundation.” These examples illustrate the basic principles we learn in basic training, foundational principles, on which we build our professional careers. Bedrock principles are solid and withstand the test of time and pressure, as well as, resisting erosion. These are the very things Sailors should reflexively know and do.

As Chief Petty Officers, we are charged with the upkeep of good order and discipline (GOAD). This should be an easy thing to do given that our Sailors were provided a solid foundation of professional principles upon which to stand. However, from time to time we find those who are living a little too much in the “loose material” and begin to slack off on their professionalism. This could be sloppy uniforms, lack of military courtesy, fitness… We may even find ourselves in the “loose material” from time to time. So, here are some ideas for instilling our Navy Core Values:

    1. Lead by example. Sometimes it’s hard to be vigilant about this one. But, your Sailors look up to you as their leader.
    2. Make sure you establish your expectations right out of the gate. Whether you just check in or a new member just did, establishing the expectation is key.
    3. Be consistent with enforcing the standards. Nobody likes a wishy-washy leader.
    4. Be fair. This goes hand in hand with consistency.
    5. Recognize those who have been standing on the “bedrock.” Recognition, just like discipline, reinforces the behavior.
