Chiefs encourage open and frank dialog, listen to Sailors and energize the communication flow up and down the chain of command. This will increase unit efficiency, mission readiness, and mutual respect.

    1. In your own words define "Active Communication”.

    1. 8. Silence is Golden. Remember the time when your mom used to say if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. This way you don't say something you may regret. Sometimes when you don't say anything you "allow" the group to figure it out for themselves which enhances teamwork and the ability to group think.

    2. 9. I have chosen to elaborate more on One on One Counseling. Remember, your task is to get the "Best" out of your Sailor not be their best friend. Sometimes you my need to be Firm & Direct/Caring and Loving. Firm & Direct - You've told 14 yr old Johnny not to leave the refrigerator door open 16 times this week. Obviously under this circumstance, loving has no play. Stern is the approach - MASH that kid by making him pay the increase on the next utility bill. Caring & Loving Approach: Explore the needs through caring "engaged" questions. For example, "I noticed you moved out of housing last month and you're due to PCS in a couple months. Is everything going alright? How did the clearing of housing go?" While you might not get the automatic information you are looking for on the first responses of these questions, you show you care and can help answer some familiar questions with housing, etc... Thus showing you care. Then, depending on the person it may open the door to more questions you can ask to get to the heart of the matter. It's amazing what a few minutes of "time" with one person can do for them, their self esteem and ability to know they are not alone in handling big processes. Sometimes they just need a little bit of help understanding how to break it down into simple steps that are manageable.

    3. Another Example Combination of the two: Sometimes when doing One on One counseling it's for negative performance. Point out the members assets to the team first. Then ask a few questions into how things are going for them at home. You should know most of this already but if you don't - open the door. Then address the current place of their work - what needs improvement and what is failing. Once you have outlined these things the member will generally come up with tons of things that have been impairing their abilities. Most of us recognize these as "excuses". While not all might be excuses, some might be an area where they just need a little assistance - it is your job to differentiate the two. Does it really take all day to process something simple? or is the paper just moving on the desk to make it look good? Address each area with a proper response, Firm or Loving(Care). Firm - I know that template can be made up for Training in 10 minutes. (What are the distractors involved in the process allowing your Sailor to make this a four hour evolution)? - Ask & show you Care. "What seems to be getting in the way for you of producing this result for us"? Some time a checklist may be the answer. Next response - Firm - We have to have you to do your job in a timely manner in order to get job X done for the future reports going up to the Wing. Do you understand the important role you play as a part of our "Team"? Sometimes we have to recognize that even us adults have a special need. If you don't seem to be successful with an individual - you need to change your approach. Some people have ADHD(me), ADD, OCD or more. While some people might not be aware they have this problem because it wasn't something expressed in development in our time lines; others are very well aware. It was just accepted that the individual was different and we carried on. In fact, OCD & planning was taught to ADHD children in my timeline to ensure future business success. Masked one with another. Am I saying everyone is a beholder of a special need - NO. I'm just saying there is still and acceptable place for them in the work center and unfortunately the world is not perfect and nor are we. So be prepared for anything and utilize you resources available to you to address work performance effectively and help your Sailor's become the best!
